Steps To Prepare For A Successful Photo Shoot As A Free Lance Photographer
The preparation for a successful model shoot is all about scripting a detailed oriented process that starts with a high level of communication between you the photographer and the model well in advance of the actual shoot date. Shoots that are ill prepared and lack the conveyance of a theme and purpose will inspire nobody and almost always produce vey unmemorable photos.
I generally start by developing a dialog with the model about what we both want to get out of the shoot....What are the photos being used for. This will influence wardrobe options, hair and makeup as well as studio location. Without a level of expectation before the shoot one can only assumes the results will be major disappointment for both of you.
Not all models have the same level of experience or training. It’s your job as the photographer to let the model know how they should prepare for the shoot.
Its important to share your ideas and to plan for the shoot which includes your main theme, pre- visualized frames and all the looks you want to incorporate so hair and makeup and outfit changes are coordinated. It’s a standard practice of mine to send out to the model a mood board prior to the shoot so that the MUA, stylist if there is one and the model are all on the same page.
In short photo shoot prep is paramount to being prepared, confident and comfortable that you will create the “WOW” images you and the model both need for your portfolios
